Uncle Jack remembered hearing that Grandma and Grandpa met in Kansas City when Grandma had come to KC to work and was staying with her Aunt & Uncle, Mayme and John Kroner. There was a church picnic (probably Blessed Sacrament Church) and Grandpa and a friend were standing outside the church. Lloyd Kroner (Mayme & John's son) drove by with Grandma in the car, saw Grandpa and his friend and offered them a ride to the picnic.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a shipping clerk for the Westvaco Corporation for 44 years. Shaumeyer was president of the Armourdale Neighbors for Progress and a member of the board of the First Christian Church of Kansas City were he was an elder and Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Georgie M. Shaumeyer of the home; a son, Robert Shaumeyer, Olathe; a daughter, Mrs. Bett Ingalls, Shawnee; two stepsons, Daniel Hendricks and Marvin Hendricks, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sherry Edwards, two brothers, Robert Shaumeyer and Albert Shaumeyer; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ridenour, all of Kansas City; and 15 grandchildren.

Mrs. Shaumeyer was a secretary at the University of Kansas Medical Center for 18 years before she retired in 1967. She was a member of the High Point Baptist Church. She was a member of the Naomi Rebekah Lodge. Patrolman Frederick F. Shaumeyer

On February 10th, 1948, Officer Shaumeyer along with Officer Ralph Schleifer were dispatched to the Frisco Railroad Yard on a vehicle stuck on the tracks. Upon arrival, Officer Shaumeyer exited his vehicle and headed toward the vehicle. He was met by a Special Agent from the railroad. They both went to examine the vehicle. It was determined that the vehicle was located outside the city limits, but within the county. As Officer Shaumeyer was returning to his vehicle to notify the county authorities, he slipped on the railroad tracks and fell about 20 feet to the ice covered Turkey Creek. Officer Shaumeyer was taken to Providence Hospital. He died from his injuries 2 days later on February 12th, 1948

Robert Shaumeyer

On December 20, 2007, Robert went to be with his beloved wife, Cleta who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 2004. Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Zion United Church of Christ, 2711 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas National Guard Museum, PO Box 19285, Topeka, KS 66619-0285 or Zion United Church of Christ. Bob was born June 18, 1923, to Rosina and Albert Shaumeyer in Kansas City, Kan. He lived his entire life in Kansas City, Kan. Robert served with U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After his release from the Army in January 1946 he went to work at the H.D. Lee Garment Company where he met his future wife, Cleta D. Brewer. They were married on April 5, 1947 in Maryville, Mo. To this marriage was born a daughter, Vicki Gayle on June 22, 1949, and son, Jeffrey Neal on April 30, 1956. In October 1949, Robert went back into military service with the Kansas Army National Guard on a part time basis. In September 1955, he went into full time service with the Kansas Army National Guard. He was promoted to Battalion Sergeant Major in October 1963 and attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major in June 1970, the rank he retired with. During the Viet Nam war he was called back into active service in May 1968 with his National Guard unit, the Second Battalion, 137th Infantry and served at Fort Carson, Colo., until December 1969. He retired from the military service on June 18, 1983, with 40 years of military service. In November 1990 he was inducted into the Kansas National Guard Hall of Fame in Topeka, Kan. Cleta and Robert were active in square dancing for many years and served as co-presidents of a square dance club and the Heart of America Federation of Square Dance Clubs. They were members of Zion United Church of Christ and the Kansas City Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Vicki and Warren Combs; son, Jeffrey and his partner Isaac Borocz, Bowie, Md.; an adopted daughter and her husband, April and Chris Hearn and their family in England; an adopted daughter, Becky and her husband, Jeff Carson, Nashville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Robert and Jason Combs; two granddaughters, Gayle and her husband Jeff Harrell and Jennifer Combs; two great-grandsons, Trystan and Eishan Harrell; a sister-in-law, Doris Clements; many beloved nieces, nephews and a host of good friends. Cleta D. Shaumeyer, 78, of Kansas City, KS, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at University of Kansas Medical Center. Cleta was born on October 6, 1925 to Orville and Iva Brewer on a farm in Andrew County, MO. She was raised on a farm near Stanberry, MO, attending to various farm chores, including handling heavy hay bales. She loved riding horses and playing the guitar. She joined the Christian Church in Island City, MO. In 1943, she moved to Kansas City, MO and went to work in a defense industry, H.D. Lee Garment Company, at that time manufacturing military uniforms. It was there, after he returned from service in World War II, that she met her future husband, Robert. They were married in Maryville, MO on April 5, 1947. Cleta, Robert and her daughter, Vicki, moved to Kansas City, KS in June 1949 and she lived there the rest of her life. After her husband joined the U.S. Army National Guard in the fall of 1949, she became active as an Army wife. She served in various officer positions, including President of the Noncommissioned Officers Auxiliary of the Kansas City Station of the Army National Guard. She moved to Fort Carson, CO when her husband served there from 1968 through 1969. She and her husband were active in square dancing for many years and they served as Co-Presidents of a square dance club, as well as the Heart of America Federation of Square Dance Clubs. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, brother and sister-in law, Kenneth and Ann Brewer. Survivors include her husband of over 56 years, Robert; her daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Warren Combs; and her son, Jeffrey. Cleta leaves two grandsons, Robert and Jason Combs; two granddaughters, Gayle Harrel and Jennifer Combs; two greatgrandsons, Trystan and Eishan; a very close friend, Isaac Borocz; many nieces, nephews, and a host of good friends. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 26, at the Zion United Church of Christ. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 35 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home.
