A Last Request

1.    When my life has reached its end,

and days on earth, for me, no more,

may I have one last request,

before they close that final door.

2.    I would like to write it now,

a note, in my own personal way,

and have it ready for that time,

       for my last, departing day.

3.    Might I hold it in my hand,

or gently lay it on my chest,

so all who come to see me, see it,

before I'm layed to final rest.

4.    I have had my chance at life,

it seems so short, but yet,

God gave to me so many years,

       I go with no regret.

5.    He gave to me the breath of life,

to Him I owe my all,

through Him I wish you comfort,

       at my final curtain call.

6.    Dear ones, I ask you not to grieve,

because of this event at hand,

hard as it is to reckon with,

death is what the master planned.

7.    I so hope the record holds,

       that you, present here today,

find the life which I have lived,

       touched favorably with your someway.

8.    Throughout my humble years on earth,

I hope that I've been worthy of,

       the long, and lasting friendships,

and my family's trust, and love.

9.    Out of the depth of darkest moments,

caring ones have seen me through,

I owe a debt of gratitude,

to each, and every, one of you.

10.   To you, who read my written lines,

       to you, who gather here,

go bear the crops, and walk the path,

and know God's tender, loving care.

11.   Farewell to friends, and family,

as we go this last, long mile,

       thank you, most sincerely,

you have made it so worthwhile.
